At US Space Command and Air Force Space Command, planners foresee a day when current military space systems--consisting of a fleet of satellites for communications, imaging, warning, and other support missions--will be augmented by a new generation of orbital vehicles and space weapons.
In the fierce competition for the spectrum, the armed forces are up against broadcasters, cell phone users, satellite link operators, and many others.
The satellite and commerical space industry is booming and the US Space Command, the Defense Information Systems Agency, and virtually all the services are keeping a close eye on it. They believe it carries major implications both for military strategy and for actual use, as military forces plan to piggyback on commercial systems when possible.
