Search for Alien Engineering Comes Up Dry – So Far

A search for colossal feats of alien engineering called "Dyson spheres" has so far found no convincing candidates within 1000 light years of Earth, but Richard Carrigan, formerly with the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, has combed through data from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite and has identified 17 possible "spheres," four of which seem most promising.

Scientist Develops Program to Understand Alien Languages

A computer programme which could help identify and even translate messages from aliens in outer space has been developed by a British scientist.

Even if there are extra terrestrials are one day discovered, scientists fear their alien tongue may make it impossible to understand them.

But John Elliott of Leeds Metropolitan University believes he has come up with software which at least will decipher the structure of their language - and be the first step in understanding what they are saying.

ET could 'Tickle' Stars to Create Galactic Internet

Advanced extraterrestrial civilisations may be sending signals through space by "tickling" stars, new research suggests. The signalling would be the galactic equivalent of the internet.

"If it exists, it might be revealed by an analysis of already-existing stellar data," says John Learned of the University of Hawaii in Honolulu.

Learned and his colleagues have focused their attention on stars that vary regularly in brightness. Crucially, these "Cepheid variables" are so luminous they can be seen as far away as 60 million light years.
